Alexander Fraser, 17th Lord Saltoun

Lord Saltoun , of Abernethy , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland , which is now led by the head of a branch of the Fraser family , the Frasers of Philorth.

The title was created for Sir Lawrence Abernethy on June 28, 1445 . Like many older titles of the Peerage of Scotland, it is subject to semi-Salic inheritance . If a title holder has no sons, it is passed on to the eldest daughter.

Since 1669, the respective holder of the title has also been the head of the part of the Clan Fraser that is based in the Lowlands . The part of the clan living in the Highlands is led by the respective Lord Lovat .

The current Lady Saltoun and her two title heirs received in 1973 from the Lord Lyon King of Arms the authorization to use the surname Fraser instead of their previous family name in order to document their function as head or future head of the clan.

Only recently has it been officially established that Margareth Abernaethy outlived her brother, the 9th Lord Saltoun, by about six weeks and was therefore the holder of the title during this time. This shifted the ordinal numbers of the subsequent owners of the title. This is not yet taken into account in older representations.

The original family seat of the Lords was Saltoun Hall near Pencaitland in East Lothian . Today the family residence is Inverey House near Braemar in Aberdeenshire .
