Wigtown ( Scottish Gaelic Baile na h-Ùige ) is a village of The Machars in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway with 921 inhabitants (as of 2011).
It is located in the Machars , a peninsula in southern Scotland and is about ten miles from the neighboring town of Whithorn . Because of its proximity to Whithorn's religious sites, Wigtown also benefited from pilgrims in the Middle Ages, becoming wealthy and elevated to the rank of Royal Burgh .
Since 1998, Wigtown has been Scotland's first official “book town” ( Booktown ) and there are now around 10 bookstores / antiquarians, mainly with second-hand books. and over 250,000 books. One of them can be rented for around 50 euros per day, including the apartment, and you can play booksellers yourself for a short while on holiday. The offer is already fully booked for a good three years in advance and has a long waiting list. The last 10-day book festival takes place annually in Wigtown.
