Bid Cassinel

Biette Cassinel or Biota Cassinelli (* around 1340, † around 1380) called "la belle Italienne", the beautiful Italian, was the lover of the regent and later King of France Charles V the Wise . She was the first official mistress of a French ruler.

Biette Cassinel was the daughter of François Cassinel († 1360), a sergeant in the royal army, and great-granddaughter of Bettino Cassinelli , who immigrated to Paris from Italy, which explains the country side of her epithet. She was the wife of Gérard de Montaigu the Elder , but this did not prevent her (and Charles V) from entering into their relationship.

Charles V married Johanna von Bourbon in 1350 and had three children from her between 1357 and 1360, including Johann (* probably 1359), the expected heir to the throne. At the same time, since 1356, from the Battle of Maupertuis , in which his father John II was captured by the English, he was obliged to govern France on his behalf. With the Peace of Brétigny in 1360, his father was released again and Karl was able to withdraw from direct responsibility.

That was the situation he found himself in when he turned away from his wife and turned to Biette Cassinel. In 1363 he had a son from her, Jean , who received the surname of Bette's husband (de Montaigu), but was recognized by Karl, who publicly admitted to bidding as his mistress: Jean de Montaigu received the title of “ Bâtard de France ”.

In 1364 the political situation changed again when King John II voluntarily went into captivity after the flight of his son Ludwig von Anjou , who had gone to London in 1360 as a hostage for the payments to be raised. Charles acted as regent a second time and shortly afterwards also became king when John II died in London in April 1364. Since his son Johann had also died in the meantime, he now felt it was his duty to look after the family. He turned to his wife again, from whom he had further children from June 1366, including the longed-for heir to the throne, later Charles VI , in December 1368 .

It can be assumed that Biette Cassinel knew how to use the relationship with Karl for herself and her family, and that she was able to maintain it even after Karl had returned to his wife. Her brother Ferry Cassinel became Bishop of Lodève in 1375 , later Bishop of Auxerre and finally Archbishop of Reims . Her son with Charles V made a career at the royal court, which made him under Charles VI. , his half-brother, to the head of the government. Her legitimate sons entered church service like their uncle and finally - long after their death - became Bishop of Paris or Archbishop of Sens
