Gérard de Montaigu the Elder

Gérard de Montaigu († July 15, 1391 ) was an advisor and secretary to the French King Charles V.

He took up the office of secretary in 1358, and in 1364 he was transferred to the Trésor des Chartes , the royal archive, where he actually took over its management, as the incumbent Pierre Turpain became permanently ill. In 1370 he became Turpain's successor. The reorganization of the archive goes back to around 1380 by Gérard de Montaigu.

He married Biette Cassinel , the sister of Ferry Cassinel , Archbishop of Reims , and lover of Charles V. With her he had at least two sons:

Another officially legitimate son was Jean de Montaigu , † 1409, one of the marmousets of King Charles VI. ; however, his actual father was King Charles V himself, so that Charles VI. was his half-brother.
