Saint-Jean-d'Hérans is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Arey in the north, Cognet in the north and northeast, Châtel-en-Trièves in the east, Mens in the south, Cornillon-en-Trièves in the west and southwest and Mayres-Savel in the Northwest.
