The municipality is located in the Arrondissement of Grenoble and belongs to the canton of Matheysine-Trièves (until 2015: canton of Mens ).

Saint-Jean-d'Hérans is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Arey in the north, Cognet in the north and northeast, Châtel-en-Trièves in the east, Mens in the south, Cornillon-en-Trièves in the west and southwest and Mayres-Savel in the Northwest.
