Saint-Paul-de-Varces is a French commune with 2,173 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Grenoble-Alpes-Métropole municipal association .
geography
Saint-Paul-de-Varces is located in eastern France in the Vercors massif , 99 kilometers southeast of Lyon and 15 kilometers southwest of Grenoble . The municipality is located in the Vercors Regional Nature Park .
Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Paul-de-Varces are Lans-en-Vercors in the northwest, Varces-Allières-et-Risset in the northeast, Vif in the southeast and Villard-de-Lans in the west. The municipality covers 1969 hectares, the mean height is 1170 meters above sea level , the Mairie stands at an altitude of 401 meters.

history
The municipality was continuously populated from the Copper Age (4300 BC to 2200 BC) to early history . During excavations, a necropolis from the Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC to 1st millennium BC) was found.
During the French Revolution , the parish was renamed Ancoin and Paul-d'Ancoin . As early as 1793, however, it was called Saint Paul de Varces again and in 1801 received the right to local self-government as Saint-Paul-de-Varces .
The current Saint-Paul church was built around 1840. In the place where the original church, which had been destroyed by a landslide , had stood. The old church had belonged to the Knights Templar . On one wall surface there is still a window with a pointed arch from the old church.

In the church of Saint-Paul there is a confessional that was built in 1747. It was classified as a Monument historique (historical monument) in 1942 .

Important occupations of the Saint-Pagnards are agriculture, viticulture and the breeding of domestic cattle.
