The municipality is located in the Arrondissement of Grenoble and belongs to the canton of Matheysine-Trièves (until 2015 La Mure ). The inhabitants are called Vaulxois .

Notre-Dame-de-Vaulx is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Jean-de-Vaulx in the north, Saint-Théoffrey in the east, La Motte-d'Aveillans in the south, La Motte-Saint-Martin in the southwest, Monteynard in the west, Notre-Dame-de-Commiers to the west and north-west and Saint-Georges-de-Commiers to the north-west.
