It belongs to the arrondissement of Grenoble and the canton of Le Sud Grésivaudan (until 2015: canton of Pont-en-Royans ). The inhabitants are called Saint-Romanais .

Saint-Romans is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Chatte in the north and north-west, Saint-Sauveur in the north and north-east, Beauvoir-en-Royans in the north-east, Presles in the east, Saint-André-en-Royans in the south, Saint-Just-de- Claix in the southwest and La Sône in the west.
