Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse is a French commune with 1,015 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located around 18 kilometers north of Grenoble (as the crow flies).
The village is located in the middle of the Chartreuse Mountains, in a basin between the mountains Chamechaude ( 2082 m ) in the south, Dent de Crolles ( 2062 m ) in the east, Grand Som ( 2026 m ) in the north and Charmant Som ( 1867 m ) in the southwest , on the banks of the Guiers-Mort river . The municipality is located in the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park .
About three kilometers north-west of the village is La Grande Chartreuse , the mother monastery of the Carthusian order , in a remote side valley . Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse is also known as a winter sports resort, there are around 35 km of ski slopes and cross-country trails with a length of 33 km.
A well-known resident was the Belgian chansonnier Jacques Brel , who owned a house here. The "Rencontres Brel", a chanson festival that has taken place annually since 1987, is named after him .
