The municipality is located in the Arrondissement of Grenoble and belongs to the canton of Le Sud Grésivaudan (until 2015: canton of Tullins ). The inhabitants are called Riverains .

La Rivière is located about 18 kilometers west-northwest of Grenoble on the Isère , which borders the municipality in the west. La Rivière is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Quentin-sur-Isère in the north, Montaud in the north-east, Autrans in the east and south-east, Saint-Gervais in the south, L'Albenc in the west and south-west and Poliénas in the west and north-west.
