Mens is a French commune with 1,397 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Trièves municipal association .

geography

Mens is located between the Vercors and Dévoluy mountain ranges, 55 kilometers south of Grenoble and 34 kilometers south of Le Pont-de-Claix on the departmental roads D66, D526 and D34.

history

Mens is on the Roman road from Grenoble to Briançon . In the Gallo-Roman period (52 BC to 5th century) there was a market place called Forum Neronis . In the 5th century, the relic of Saint Mens reached the community, which was then called Saint-Mens until the 16th century , but then lost its Saint . Around 1150 the Knights Templar established itself in Mens. In the 13th century Mens was the capital of the Trièves . In the 16th century, Mens became a center of Calvinism . In 1561 a Calvinist church was built. The population increased, there were about 1200 inhabitants of which 90% were Protestants .

Personalities

Antoine Froment (* 1509 in Mens; † 1581 in Geneva ) was a Reformed clergyman and chronicler.

Culture and sights

The Notre-Dame church was built in the 11th century. The bell tower dates from the 12th century. The transept dates from the 14th century. The church was rebuilt in the 19th century, and the date 1833 can be found on the southern outer wall.

The partially covered place de la Halle (market square) dates from the 15th century.

There are three identical fountains from the 18th century in Mens, one on the market square, one on the square by the town hall and one on place Paul-Brachet .

The Mens Alors! Music festival takes place every year in August . instead of.

economy

A large part of the Mensois work in agriculture and the timber industry . Pastures and orchards shape the landscape. Grain is grown and cattle is raised.
