The Musée de la Révolution française ("Museum of the French Revolution") is the only French museum that traces the time of the French Revolution . Inaugurated on July 13, 1984 for the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Revolution, it is located in Vizille Castle , where the Dauphiné Estates General took place on July 21, 1788 . The building was also a residence of the Presidents of the French Republic. The museum sees itself as a history museum based on works of art.

The library (documentation center) is named after Albert Soboul , whose teaching and publications have profoundly shaped the discipline and who was elected President of the Museum's Scientific Council on June 23, 1982, less than three months before his death.
