Chat (fr. For cat) is the name of three-masted sailing ships in the 17th century in France , and later in the 18th and 19th century in Norway as a sailing easier and coastal sailors were used. They were built similarly to the larger, also French Chasse-marée .

One chat was built for sailing in shallow, flat-bottomed coastal waters and had oars at the bow and stern . The ship was 20 to 25 m long, 6 to 7 m wide and its draft was about 2.5 m. All three masts were driven with square sails . The load capacity was about 60 tons .
