The Sassenage Castle - the last seat of the Sassenage family

Sassenage was one of the most influential Dauphiné families .

history

It came from the Royans with the capital Pont-en-Royans . The family's ancestral home is at Sassenage Castle in the municipality of Sassenage not far from Grenoble . The most famous family member is Marguerite de Sassenage , the mistress of King Louis XI.

Members of the first house Sassenage emerged as bishops of Grenoble in the 12th and 13th centuries, the second house Sassenage descended from the house of Bérenger and thus the princes of Royans. The Sassenage house died out in the 18th century.

Bleu de Vercors-Sassenage blue cheese was named after a baron who released this cheese for sale in the 14th century.
