The Sassenage Castle ( French Château de Sassenage ) is not far from Grenoble in the French commune of Sassenage in the Isère department .

history

The castle was built from 1662 to 1669 by Laurent Sommaire on behalf of Charles Louis Alphonse de Sassenage. It is the last building of the family of the Sassenage . Castle and gardens were in 1942 as historique monument under monument protection provided.

architecture

The castle was built in the classical style from calcareous sandstone . The slate roof comes from Besse-en-Oisans and the tiles from Saint-Quentin-sur-Isère . A carved relief shows the fairy Melusine and the coat of arms of the family Sassenage. The interior design dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Particularly noteworthy are the staircase with balustrades and stone arches, the vaulted kitchen around a large fireplace and the furniture by the carpenter Hache. Sassenage Castle is one of the few castles whose furniture and fittings have remained since the Ancien Régime in the time before the Revolution .

Gardens

The first gardens date from the end of the Renaissance period and are very much influenced by Italian gardens. Design elements such as a labyrinth of box trees , a grotto , iron statues and water features are used in them. During the construction of today's palace, the gardens were designed more regularly. They were among the largest in the Dauphiné . An English landscape garden was added to the complex at the end of the 18th century . In the 19th century, especially in 1853, the garden was expanded and almost 3,000 trees and shrubs were planted.

Todays use

The last heiress of the Bérenger-Sassenage family bequeathed the castle and part of her legacy to the Fondation de France in 1971 . To this end, the “Bérenger-Sassenage Foundation” was created, which is under the patronage of the Fondation de France Foundation and whose task it is to generate the funds required to maintain the facility through the management of the bequeathed assets. When an attempt was made to auction some of the collections, this caused great outrage. The auction was banned at the last moment - on the eve of the scheduled auction date - by the Paris district court for a period of two years.

Visits to the castle with guided tours are possible. Various types of events can also be held, in particular conferences for up to 130 people and receptions for 30 to 250 people.
