The municipality of Viviers-du-Lac was already settled during Roman times, which could be proven on the basis of wall foundations, ceramic fragments and inscriptions. The place name is derived from the French word vivier (fish pond). Viviers-du-Lac was first mentioned in a document around 1100 as Ecclesia de Vivariis and was owned by Aix in the Middle Ages. In 1956 the parish was renamed from Le Viviers to Viviers-du-Lac .
