geography
location
Saint-Offenge is located at 598 m , about 20 km north of the prefecture of Chambéry and 21 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The municipality extends in the foothills of the Alps on a plateau on the lower western slope of the Montagne de Bange (part of the Bauges massif ), above the valley cut of a small river, the Sierre . Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Offenge are Saint-Ours and Cusy in the north, Arith and Saint-François-de-Sales in the east, Les Déserts in the south and Montcel and Épersy in the west.
topography
The area of the 15.63 km 2 municipality covers a section of the French Alpine foothills. The western border runs along the Sierre , cut into an erosion valley , which with its side streams drains the area west to the Lac du Bourget . From the Sierre valley, the municipal area extends eastward over a gently sloping slope to the plateau of Saint-Offenge-Dessous, which has a moorland, and to the meadow-lined slope of Saint-Offenge-Dessus. This is followed by an increasingly steep, wooded slope, partly interrupted by rock walls, of the Montagne de Bange rim of the Bauges massif. With 1,449 m of the Col de la Cochette the highest elevation of Saint-Offenge is reached north to altitude. In a long, narrow corner, the community soil extends southward to the high plateau of Mont Revard ( 1360 m ). The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).
In addition to the two villages of Saint-Offenge-Dessous and Saint-Offenge-Dessus, Saint-Offenge also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- Les Nantets ( 480 m ) in the Sierre valley
- La Plesse ( 585 m ) on the high plateau of Saint-Offenge
- Le Croset ( 520 m ) in the valley of the Sierre
- Le Rocheret ( 600 m ) at the western foot of the Montagne de Bange
- Les Huguets ( 690 m ) on the western slope of the Montagne de Bange
- Les Suavets ( 720 m ) on the western slope of the Montagne de Bange
- Cornat ( 750 m ) on the western slope of the Montagne de Bange above the Sierre valley
- Les Combes ( 710 m ) in the valley of the Sierre at the foot of the Montagne de Bange
history
Saint-Offenge was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. The place name goes back to Saint Euphemia , martyr of Chalcedon (city) . Since the 14th century, the place has been divided into the two parishes of Saint-Offenge-Dessous (the "-Dessous ..." corresponds to "Unter ..." in German place names) and Saint-Offenge-Dessus ("Ober .. .") on. In the Middle Ages, both places belonged to the rule of La Bâtie-d'Albanais.
The merger of the two villages of Saint-Offenge-Dessous and -Dessus, only 500 m away, to form a new municipality was decided by the two municipal councils in October 2014 and came into force on January 1, 2015. Saint-Offenge-Dessous became the capital of the new municipality (French: commune nouvelle ).
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Offenge-Dessous was built in the 19th century. There is a country chapel above Le Croset. The village church of Saint-Offenge-Dessus was built from 1849 in the style of Sardinian neoclassicism .
population
With 1104 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Offenge is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the number of inhabitants declined in the 20th century, a significant increase in population has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s, thanks to the residential area, especially in the district of Saint-Offenge-Dessous. The local residents of Saint-Offenge are called Saint-Offengeois (es) in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
The two villages in Saint-Offenge were dominated by agriculture well into the 20th century . In addition, various local small businesses have recently developed. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Chambéry and Annecy area .
The community is located away from the major thoroughfares. The main access is from the D911 departmental road from Grésy-sur-Aix to Cusy. There are other road connections with Saint-Ours and Montcel. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 10 km away.
