The center of Thoiry on the eastern flank of the Leysse Valley

Thoiry is a French municipality with 457 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Thoiry is located at 643  m , about nine kilometers east of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the west of the Savoie department, in the southern part of the Bauges massif , in a panoramic location on the eastern slope of the Leysse , at the foot of Mont Margériaz .

The area of the 17.75 km² large municipal area includes a section of the solid mass of the Bauges. The western border runs along the Leysse (tributary of the Lac du Bourget ), which flows here in a valley to the south. Below Thoiry it takes on the Ruisseau de la Reysse from the left , which with its notched valley also forms the southern border of the area. From the Leysse the community area extends eastward over the slope of Thoiry and onto the adjacent mountain ridge with the Pointe des Torchets ( 1469  m ) and the Mont de la Croix ( 1614  m ). In the north, the valley is dominated by a side peak of Mont Margériaz (at 1780  m the highest elevation of Thoiry), which drops off steeply with a striking rock face. To the east, the municipality extends in a narrow corner to the Col des Prés (transition to Aillon-le-Jeune) and to the mountain range with the Mont de la Buffaz ( 1660  m ) and the Pointe de la Galoppaz ( 1680  m ). The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

In addition to the actual town center, Thoiry also includes various hamlet settlements and farmsteads (all located on the eastern slope of the Leysse), including:

  • Les Chavonettes ( 700  m )
  • Thorméroz ( 750  m )
  • La Fougère ( 740  m )
  • Les Chavonnes ( 960  m )
  • Le Sauget ( 1020  m ) on the southern slope of Mont Margériaz

Neighboring municipalities of Thoiry are Les Déserts in the north, Aillon-le-Jeune in the east, Puygros in the south and Saint-Jean-d'Arvey in the west.

history

Thoiry is first mentioned in a document in the 11th century. The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Torius and means something like that of the people of Torius (Toriacum). In Thoiry there was a priory of the Augustinian canons already before 1110 , which was merged with the priory in Chambéry in 1467. Thoiry was part of the Arvey domain since the Middle Ages.

Attractions

The village church of Thoiry was built in the 19th century. There is a chapel in the hamlet of La Fougère.

With 457 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Thoiry is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population fell sharply in the first half of the 20th century, there has been a significant increase in population since the early 1980s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Thoiry was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Chambéry area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Chambéry over the Col des Prés to Aillon-le-Jeune. Another local road connection is with Puygros. The closest connection to the A43 motorway is around 14 km away.
