topography

The area of the 12.72 km 2 municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura on the west side of an anticline that extends between the Lac du Bourget and the Rhone Valley in a north-south direction. The summit ridge forms the eastern municipal boundary and includes the up to 969  m towering Mont de la Charvaz and the 1452  m high Molard Noir , a summit of the Dent du Chat . Between these two elevations the ridge is sunk a few hundred meters, there is the 638  m high pass crossing Col du Chat . The anticline is slightly narrowed in the area of Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu and forms a half-sided basin, at the bottom of which the village and two small lakes extend, the Lacs de Chevelu .

history

The parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The place name Chevelu goes back to a surname that was first mentioned in 1125 by a Bernardus de Capilluto in connection with the place. With Chevellutum (1238) and in the 16th century Capellutium it passed to the place. It was not until 1729 that the church patron was first found in the place name of Saint-Jean de Cheveluz . In the Middle Ages, the area of Saint-Jean belonged to the von Chevelu family from around 1100 to 1514, who had their lordship in the Château de Cinne , of which only ruins remain today. During their reign, family members and feudal men built other castles and permanent houses on their territory , including the Maison forte de Gimilieu (12th century), the Maison forte de Prélian (12th century), the Château de Bergin (1314) and the Château de la Forest (14th century).

Attractions

From Molard Noir and the neighboring peaks, which are connected by a hiking trail, there is an impressive view both to the east with the Lac du Bourget and the city of Chambéry in front of the Alpine panorama, as well as to the west with the Jura mountain ranges behind the Rhone. There is also a hiking trail in the area of the two lakes, and the more southern lake offers swimming opportunities.

The village church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built in the 19th century in place of a previous building. Several of the medieval feudal residences have been preserved, with the Château de la Forest inscribed as a monument historique .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu was predominantly an agricultural village. Viticulture at the foot of Mont de la Charvaz is particularly important . The village is located in the Savoie wine-growing region , where white , rosé and red wines of various grape varieties are marketed as AOC Vin de Savoie . In addition, the place is still within the scope of the stricter designation of origin Vin de Savoie Jongieux . This applies to white wines with Jacquère as the main grape variety (at least 80% vines) and to red wine blends made from Gamay , Mondeuse and Pinot Noir . White wines from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) can also be produced under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie .

In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry areas.

The village is located directly on the department road D1504, the former national road N504 from Ambérieu-en-Bugey to Chambéry. This crosses the Mont du Chat in a 1.5 km long tunnel opened in 1932, half of which is in the municipality. It facilitates connections to the greater Chambéry area with its airport , SNCF train station and connections to the A41 and A43 motorways . There are other road connections with the neighboring communities of Billième and Saint-Paul.

In Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
