Montagnole is a French municipality with 887 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

location

Montagnole is located at 556  m , about 3 km south of the prefecture of Chambéry , 42 km north-northeast of the city of Grenoble and 44 km south-southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends on the northern edge of the Chartreuse , a limestone massif in the northern French Prealps. Neighboring municipalities of Montagnole are Cognin , Jacob-Bellecombette and Barberaz in the north, Saint-Baldoph and Apremont in the east, Entremont-le-Vieux (point of contact) in the south and Saint-Cassin in the west.

topography

The area of the 11.30 km 2 municipal area is divided into two parts: the gently rising foothills of the Chartreuse in the north with the settlement area of Montagnole and a southern part characterized by wooded steep slopes. At its extreme end is the almost vertically sloping rock face of the 1486  m high Pointe de la Gorgeat , on which the municipality reaches its highest point. The municipality is therefore within the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional de la Chartreuse ). To the east, the municipal boundary runs along a ridge several kilometers long, descending from the Pointe de la Gorgeat , which forms a natural dividing line between Montagnole and the slopes of Saint-Baldoph and Apremont. Several mountain streams arise on the flank of this ridge and drain the community soil towards Hyère . The community area is mostly (55%) overgrown with trees, meadows make up a further 36%. The remains of the cement quarries have a share of almost 4%.

Montagnole is a scattered settlement , the built-up plots of which are lined up mainly along the streets that run through the municipality. In the northeast there are several quarries of a former cement factory. A military training area occupies the southern part of the municipality.

history

The place Montagnole was first mentioned in a document around 1100 in the High Middle Ages as the site of a church ( Ecclesia de Montaniola ). Other mentions are Parrochia de Montagnola (1260) and Ecclesia Sancti Andree de Montaigniola (1487). The name is a diminutive of montagne (dt .: mountain).

Shortly after 1248, when a landslide from Mont Granier buried several parishes including the deanery Saint-André , the deanery was moved to Montagnole and the church was also dedicated to Saint Andrew . For several centuries this gave the parish a certain overriding importance, and its church was rebuilt in the 15th century.

From 1863 to 1993, limestone was quarried in Montagnole on the border with Bellecombette, which was first processed in Cognin and later into cement on site. The quantities of material were transported through Jacob-Bellecombette, a cog railway operated from 1912 to 1924 and a material ropeway from 1924 to 1963.

With 887 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montagnole is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population had continuously decreased over a period of around 100 years after the annexation of Savoy to France (733 inhabitants were counted in 1861), a strong population increase has been recorded again since the mid-1970s. The locals of Montagnole are called Montagnolais (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montagnole was an entirely agricultural village. Today around a dozen companies are still active, primarily in the animal production sector . There are also various local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has mainly developed into a residential community whose employees work as commuters in the larger localities in the area, especially in the greater Aix – Chambéry area .

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on the D912 department road, which leads from Jacob-Bellecombette to the ridge of the inner Chartreuse Mountains. Further road connections exist with the neighboring villages of Saint-Cassin, Barberaz and Saint-Baldoph. The next motorway connection to the regional motorway network at Chambéry is around 8 km away. Airports in the region include Chambéry-Savoie (15 km away), Lyon-St-Exupéry (90 km) or Geneva (94 km).

In Montagnole there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
