Jongieux in the middle of its vineyards above the Rhone Valley

Jongieux is a French municipality with 293 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bugey Savoyard , is a member of the Yenne community association and is not far from the Rhone on the slopes of the Montagne du Chat massif .

geography

Jongieux is located at 305  m on the northwestern edge of the Savoie department, about 20 kilometers northwest of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends on the western slope of Mont de la Charvaz , a 1158  m high mountain in an anticline in the southern Jura, which continues with the Mont du Chat and the Chaîne de l'Épine further south and in the east to the Lac du Bourget borders. The 6.43 km 2 municipal area extends up to a few meters from the summit of Mont de la Charvaz and is bounded by its chain of peaks running northwards. From there, the area drops steeply to the west, then gently down to a pronounced edge of the terrain, behind which the swampy plain around Yenne and the Rhone Valley spreads. In the north-west, the community area comprises an approximately 100 m long section of the banks of the Rhone.

The following settlements and hamlets belong to the municipality:

  • Barcontian ( 265  m ) about 1 km south of Lucey, at a point where the foothills of the Mont de la Charvaz reach the flat Rhone plain,
  • Aimavigne ( 290  m ) halfway between Barcontian and Jongieux,
  • Jongieux-le-Haut ( 395  m ) at the foot of Mont de la Charvaz .

Neighboring communities of Jongieux are Lucey in the north, Ontex in the east, Billième in the south and Yenne in the west. In the north-west, the municipality also borders on Massignieu-de-Rives in the neighboring Ain department .

Overview of the districts of Jongieux

history

The first written mentions of the parish of Jongieux can only be found in the 14th century, although the name Jongiacum at that time indicates a much older origin (Villa des Jucundius ). In the Middle Ages, Jongieux formed a small lordship around the Château de La Mar , which was subordinate to the Lords of Lucey. With their elevation to castellans in 1563, Jongieux became a direct part of the lands of Lucey, which rose to marquisate in 1654 .

Attractions

  • The Château de La Mar is a former permanent house from the 13th century. Located between Barcontain and Aimavigne, it belonged for a while to the Counts of Mareste, who gave the property its name. The present condition goes back to a restoration in 1625. During the French Revolution , the building was expropriated and in 1818 it came into the possession of the family of General Benoît de Boigne , who sold it towards the end of the 19th century. Today it houses a winery.
  • The current parish church under the patron saint Saint-Maurice was built between 1883 and 1885 halfway between Aimavigne and today's Jongieu-le-Haut, the medieval church building of which was abandoned. Extensive renovation work took place between 2001 and 2013, which ended with the installation of six new stained glass windows.
  • From the highest elevation on the edge of the terrain west of Jongieux, there is a panorama over the approximately 200 meters lower lying plain of Yenne and the Rhone Valley. The Saint-Romain chapel, built in 1995, is located here . Just like the parish church, it is a stop on the Via Gebennensis Way of St. James , which leads from Geneva to Le Puy and there connects to Via Podiensis .
  • The bowl stones from Follioules in Jongieux belong to the group of bowl stones from Billième .

With 293 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Jongieux is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population had steadily decreased towards the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century (470 inhabitants were counted in 1860), it stagnated at around 200 in the second half of the 20th century. In recent years, thanks to the attractive residential area, there has been a significant increase in population again. The local residents of Jongieux are called Jongiolan (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Jongieux is a predominantly wine - growing village in the Savoie wine-growing region . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white , rosé and red wines of various grape varieties . The place is the center of the stricter Denomination of Origin Vin de Savoie Jongieux . This applies to white wines with Jacquère as the main grape variety (at least 80% vines) and to red wine blends made from Gamay , Mondeuse and Pinot Noir . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) can also be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie or under the stricter designation of origin Roussette de Savoie Marestel .

In addition to viticulture, there are now some local small-scale businesses. Since the end of the 20th century, the village has increasingly developed into a residential community whose employees work in the larger towns in the area. A tunnel through the Montagne du Chat massif made the connection to the greater Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry areas much easier.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. Access is via three local road links with Lucey, Yenne and Billième. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is 21 km away and the A43 is around 29 km away.
