location

La Chapelle-Saint-Martin is located at 445  m , about 16 kilometers northwest of the prefecture of Chambéry , 51 kilometers north of the city of Grenoble and 72 kilometers east of the city of Lyon (as the crow flies). The village is located on the western edge of the Savoie department, a few kilometers from the Rhone . Neighboring municipalities of La Chapelle-Saint-Martin are Traize in the north, Saint-Paul and Meyrieux-Trouet in the east, Saint-Pierre-d'Alvey in the south and Loisieux in the west.

topography

The area of the 2.57 km 2 municipal area comprises a section of the southern French Jura on a broad base of terrain that rises east of the municipality to a ridge ( anticline ) rising to about 1500  m , the Mont du Chat . The hilly communal soil is drained by the Flon brook towards the Rhone. Together with two tributaries that are also deepened into the surrounding area, it forms the municipal boundaries in the north, east and south and creates a general east-west divide.

Community structure

The settlement area of La Chapelle-Saint-Martin consists of several scattered hamlets and farmsteads grouped around the village church, including

  • Tholou ( 400  m ) on the eastern edge of the municipality above the Flon ,
  • Missieux ( 455  m ) halfway between Tholou and le Villard ,
  • le Villard ( 524  m ), a former mansion on a hill on the south-western edge of the municipality, today a homestead.

history

In the Middle Ages, La Chapelle-Saint-Martin was part of the lordship of Le Villard, whose castle was on the southern edge of today's municipality. The feudal estate with its own jurisdiction existed from 1288 to 1735 and also included the neighboring municipality of Saint-Pierre-d'Alvey and part of Loisieux.

Attractions

Ruins of the former manor Château du Villard are still preserved today.

With 148 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), La Chapelle-Saint-Martin is one of the smallest communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 239 inhabitants), the population has increased again since the turn of the millennium. The locals of La Chapelle-Saint-Martin are called chapellus in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, La Chapelle-Saint-Martin was predominantly an agricultural village. Today there are only a few farms and just as few local small businesses, instead the village has developed into a residential community. The employed are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry areas.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Yenne to Novalaise . Further road connections exist with Loisieux and Saint-Pierre-d'Alvey. There are connections to the regional and supraregional infrastructure via the greater Chambéry area, about 25 km away, with its airport , SNCF train station and connections to the A41 and A43 motorways .
