Drumettaz-Clarafond is a municipality with 2807 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the French Savoie department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of La Motte-Servolex in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Drumettaz-Clarafond is located at 380  m , near Aix-les-Bains , about 10 km north of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, on the western edge of the Bauges massif and at the foot of Mont Revard , near the Lac du Bourget in a panoramic position around 100 m above the Tillet valley basin.

The area of the 11.38 km² municipal area includes a section in the Alpine foothills. The western border runs along the canalized Tillet , which drains the area north to Lac du Bourget. It flows through a wide valley basin, which is separated by the ridge of Viviers-du-Lac from the adjacent valley of Chambéry to the west. From the Tillet the community area extends eastward over the 1 km wide valley floor and the gently rising slope of Drumettaz. This is followed by the wooded steep slope of Mont Revard, which is characterized by striking, vertically sloping rock walls. On the high plateau of Mont Revard, the highest point of Drumettaz-Clarafond is reached at around 1500  m .

The community consists of different districts and hamlet settlements, namely:

  • Drumettaz ( 280  m ) in the Tillet valley
  • Clarafond ( 460  m ) at the foot of Mont Revard
  • Sérages ( 420  m ) at the foot of Mont Revard
  • Freseney ( 440  m ) at the foot of Mont Revard

The neighboring communities of Drumettaz-Clarafond are Aix-les-Bains and Mouxy in the north, Les Déserts in the east, Verel-Pragondran and Méry in the south and Viviers-du-Lac in the west.

history

Finds from the Bronze Age indicate a very early settlement of the community area. Drumettaz is first mentioned in a document in 1232 under the name Drumetaz ; from 1568 the name Drumete has been handed down. Clarafond appears in the documents for the first time in 1100 as Ecclesia Clarafontis . The place name goes back to the Latin words clarus (clear) and fons (source).

In 1110, Bishop Hugo of Grenoble founded the Saint-Maurice priory in Clarafond. The Augustinian priory was abandoned in the late 16th century and fell into disrepair in the period that followed. Drumettaz belonged to the dominion of Aix and was the center of its own small rule. With the union of the two parishes Clarafond and Drumettaz, today's double parish was created in 1723.

Attractions

Drumettaz Church was built in 1860. Lightning struck the top of their bell tower in 1911, which was not rebuilt afterwards. In Clarafond there is the Saint-Maurice chapel, which represents the choir of the former Gothic priory church. Of the mundane buildings, the Château du Donjon and several old farmhouses from the 16th to 18th centuries are worth mentioning.

After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century, there has been a marked increase in population since the early 1960s thanks to the attractive residential area. Since then the number of inhabitants has almost tripled. The inhabitants are called drumettant (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Drumettaz-Clarafond was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are various small and medium-sized businesses today. In the meantime the village has developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Chambéry area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that leads from Chambéry to Mouxy. There are other road connections with Aix-les-Bains and Viviers-du-Lac. The next connection to the A41 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is around 5 km away.

Parish partnership

A partnership has existed with the Italian municipality of Sutri in the province of Viterbo (Lazio) since 1999.
