Ontex is a French municipality with 105 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .
geography
Ontex is located in the north-west of the Savoie department, about 22 kilometers north-northwest of the prefecture of Chambéry and 76 kilometers east of the city of Lyon (as the crow flies). The village is located at 712 m on a ridge between the Rhône valley and the Lac du Bourget . Ontex's neighboring communities are Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille in the north and east, La Chapelle-du-Mont-du-Chat and Billième in the south, and Jongieux and Lucey in the west.
The area of the 4.62 km² municipal area includes a section of the mountain range of Mont de la Charvaz , which is part of an anticline in the southern French Jura . The municipal boundary runs in the east and west along two edges of land, behind which the ridge of Mont de la Charvaz drops steeply, in the east to the Lac du Bourget and in the west to the plain of Yenne . The village itself is on a slope a few hundred meters below the summit ridge. In the south, the parish grounds extend to the summit of Mont de la Charvaz , which at 1158 m is the highest point in the parish.

From the municipal area of Ontex there are several places with views of the Lac du Bourget, the Hautecombe Abbey below the village and the town of Aix-les-Bains .

With 105 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Ontex is one of the smallest municipalities in the Savoie department. After the population fell sharply in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 136 inhabitants), a slight increase in population has been recorded since the mid-1970s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Ontex is now a pure residential community, whose employees work as commuters in the larger localities in the area. The municipality consists largely of wooded slopes. A single farm is still registered in the village (status: 2010).
The village is away from any through roads on a small department road that branches off the main road along the west side of Lac du Bourget and leads to Lucey.
