Verthemex is a French municipality with 229 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry and is a member of the Yenne community association .
geography
location
Verthemex is located at 662 m , about 13 kilometers northwest of the prefecture of Chambéry and 75 kilometers east of the city of Lyon (as the crow flies). The village is located on the western edge of the Savoie department on the western slope of a mountain range that separates Lac du Bourget from the Rhone Valley . Verthemex's neighboring municipalities are Meyrieux-Trouet in the north, Le Bourget-du-Lac and La Motte-Servolex in the east, and Marcieux in the south and west.
topography
The area of the 9.28 km 2 municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura on the west side of an anticline that extends west of the Lac du Bourget in a north-south direction. The summit ridge of these anticlines forms the eastern boundary of the municipality in the area of Mont du Chat , where the highest point of Verthemex is reached at 1467 m . Its steep, wooded flank merges into a less pronounced slope in the area of the town center, which continues to the deeply cut Flon stream . Two of its right tributaries, the Ruisseau des Balmes and Blanchet , drain the municipality and form its northern and western borders.
Community structure
In addition to the actual town center, Verthemex also includes several hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:
- Vacheresse , La Ville and Les Buissons (around 920 m ) on a ledge on the western slope of Mont du Chat ,
- Le Campet ( 550 m ) and L'Abbaye ( 520 m ) west of the town center.
history
The village was first mentioned in 1209 as ad Vertemays . It is not clear whether the name goes back to a description of the place or a proper name. Vertemex can already be found around a hundred years later . In Verthemex there was a small lordship in the Middle Ages that was owned by the lords of Saint-Agneux (now part of Saint-Paul ) who had been notarized since 1272 . Over the period from 1803 to 1834, the parish of Verthemex was merged with that of Meyrieux-Trouet.
A mill, the Moulin dit de Vaux , worked on the watercourse of the Ruisseau des Balmes and was already on the maps in 1732. It was shut down in 1930 and its mill ponds continued to be used for fish farming.
Attractions
From the summit chain of Mont du Chat , which is accessible via a hiking trail, there is an impressive view both to the east with the Lac du Bourget and the city of Chambéry in front of the alpine panorama, as well as to the west side with the Jura mountain ranges behind the Rhone .

With a population of 229 (as of January 1, 2017), Verthemex is one of the very small communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century (before 1900 there were regularly over 300 inhabitants), a slight population increase has been recorded since the 1990s. The local residents of Verthemex are called Verthemelan (ne) s in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
Verthemex was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition to the few remaining farmers, there are now some local small-scale businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry areas.
The village is located away from any through roads and can be reached from the neighboring communities by means of departmental roads. There are connections to the regional and national infrastructure via the greater Chambéry area, about 25 km away, with its motorway connections, SNCF train station and Chambéry-Savoie airport . The A43 motorway has an entrance 10 km from Verthemex.
