Vimines is a French commune with 2,028 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .
geography
location
Vimines is located at 550 m , about 5 km southwest of the prefecture of Chambéry , 41 km north-northeast of the city of Grenoble and 44 km south-southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends on a ridge at the transition from the Jura mountains to the pre-alpine limestone massif of the Chartreuse . Neighboring municipalities of Vimines are Saint-Sulpice in the north, Cognin and Saint-Cassin in the east, Saint-Thibaud-de-Couz in the south and Attignat-Oncin , Lépin-le-Lac and Aiguebelette-le-Lac in the west.
topography
The area of the 14.23 km 2 municipality covers a section of the eastern flank of the Chaîne de l'Épine , the southernmost anticline foothills of the French Jura. From the foot of the Chaîne de l'Épine, a wide, approximately 200 m high base protrudes into the valley furrow of Chambéry, on which the settlement area of the municipality is located. This base was formed into a ridge with a flat plateau by the deeply cut mountain stream Forézan in the north and the Hyère in the south. The two watercourses drain the municipality and form the natural municipal boundaries. The Hyère valley is already included in the Chartreuse Mountains, so that the entire municipality is part of the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional de la Chartreuse ).
In the southwest, not far from Mont Grèle , the municipal area on the Chaîne de l'Épine reaches its highest point at 1378 m . In the northwest, the Chaîne de l'Épine is only about one kilometer wide and less high and has a cut that is sunk to 903 m , the Col Saint-Michel pass, which is used by hiking trails . The western municipal boundary runs a few hundred meters beyond the mountain range on the west side of the Chaîne de l'Épine. Its steep flanks and the Forézan valley are completely forested and account for around 45% of the community area. Meadows on the other slopes and other agricultural areas account for 18 and 36%, respectively.
Community structure
In addition to the actual town center, Vimines also includes several hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:
- L'Hodié and Le Lard (both 520 m ) below the Col Saint-Michel ,
- Sous le Mollard ( 530 m ) west of the village center,
- Grand Village ( 520 m ) and Les Quidoz ( 550 m ) in the southern part of the municipality.
- The slope above the Hyère in the northeast part of the municipality is occupied by a scattered settlement mostly made up of single-family houses.
history
The place Vimines was first mentioned as a parish around 1075 in the High Middle Ages ( Curatus de Vimenes , Ecclesia de Vimenis ). Later variants are Vimène (1573) and Viminne (1738). Various possible origins of the name, which was originally set in the plural, are conceivable, including that from the Latin word vimen for willow or willow bushes. In the Middle Ages, there was a small manor with a permanent house in Vimines , which belonged to the possessions of the Lords of Montfort in neighboring Saint-Sulpice. Until the 18th century Vimines was taxable to the Bishop of Grenoble .
Attractions
The village church, built in 1873, replaced a previous medieval building.

With 2028 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Vimines is one of the smaller municipalities in the Savoie department. After the population had declined evenly in the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century (in 1861 there were still 1209 inhabitants), a massive increase in population began in the 1970s, due to the growth in the greater Chambéry area. Scattered across the Vimines Rise are numerous new single-family homes. The local residents of Vimines are called Vimenais (es) in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
To this day, Vimines is an agricultural village, whose farms are active in the fields of cattle breeding and agriculture . In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also developed into a residential community, with the conversion of fields into building land at the expense of agricultural land. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry areas.
The village is not directly on a major thoroughfare, but benefits from the transport infrastructure in nearby Chambéry, where the nearest regional train station and connections to the motorway network are located. Through the valley of Hyère on the southeastern outskirts of the village leading railway Saint-André-le-Gaz-Chambery and the secondary road D1006 (former N6 ), which Chambery with the Savoyard foothills ( Avant-Pays Savoyard ) and the towns in the lower Isère -Tal connects. Access roads lead from here and from the neighboring village of Saint-Sulpice to the individual parts of the settlement. Airports in the region include Chambéry-Savoie (15 km away), Lyon-St-Exupéry (90 km) or Geneva (94 km).
In Vimines there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
