location

The village is located on the western edge of the Savoie department, a few kilometers from the Rhone . topography

The area of the 7.70 km² municipal area covers a section of the southern French Jura on a broad base of terrain, which is formed by an anticline between the Lac du Bourget and the Rhone. The community is roughly halfway between the Mont du Chat ridge, which rises to around 1500  m, in the east and a precipice in the west that slopes steeply to the Rhone Valley. The hilly communal soil is drained by the Flon stream northwards to the Rhone. The Flon and one of its tributaries form the municipal boundaries in the north, east and south. They are deepened up to about 100 m into the surrounding area and lie at some distance from the settlements, which are concentrated on the peaks rising in between.

Community structure

In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Pierre-d'Alvey also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • les Reveyrons ( 530  m ) east of the municipality,
  • le Carrel ( 593  m ) in the south of the municipality and itself surrounded by several small hamlets: les Grandjeans , les Massets and Oncieux .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1729 as Saint-Pierre d'Arvey .

After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century (in the 19th century more than 500 inhabitants were regularly counted), a slight population increase has been recorded again in recent years. The local residents of Saint-Pierre-d'Alvey are called San-Pierran (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Pierre-d'Alvey was a predominantly agricultural village and is still home to more agricultural than commercial small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry areas.

The village is far from any thoroughfares and is on the secondary road accessible D921 which Yenne with Novalaise connects. There are connections to the regional and national infrastructure via the greater Chambéry area, which is between 20 and 25 km away, with its airport , SNCF train station and connections to the A41 and A43 motorways .
