Montcel is a French municipality with 999 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Aix-les-Bains-1 in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Montcel is located at 596  m , about 19 kilometers north of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the foothills of the Alps at a panoramic location on the lower northwest slope of Mont Revard (part of the Bauges massif ), above the Sierre valley.

The area of the 15.23 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Alpine foothills. The area is bounded by the Sierre to the east and north . This rises on the high plateau of Mont Revard and initially flows northward in a notch valley cut into the slope. Below Montcel it turns west and leads its water to the Lac du Bourget . The western border forms a side stream running parallel to the upper reaches of the Sierre. From the valley of the Sierre the community area extends southward over the gently sloping slope of Montcel to the promontory of La Chapelle. This is followed by an increasingly steep and densely wooded slope on the edge of the Bauges massif. On the ridge of the Tour de l'Angle Est , Montcel's highest point is reached at 1563  m . To the south of this is the headwaters of the Sierre and the high plateau of Mont Revard ( 1360  m ). The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

In addition to the actual town center, Montcel also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Lachat ( 460  m ) on a ledge above the Sierre valley
  • Les Légers ( 450  m ) on the slope above the Sierre valley
  • La Chapelle ( 760  m ) on a ledge at the foot of Mont Revard

Neighboring municipalities of Montcel are Épersy in the north, Saint-Offenge in the east, Les Déserts and Pugny-Chatenod in the south and Trévignin and Grésy-sur-Aix in the west.

history

Montcel is first mentioned in a document in 1257 as Moncellum . The place name goes back to the old French word moncel (Latin monticulus ) meaning small mountain . In the Middle Ages, Montcel was owned by the Lords of Clermont.

With 999 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Montcel is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the 20th century, a significant increase in population has been recorded since the beginning of the 1980s thanks to the residential area.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Montcel was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Chambéry and Annecy area .

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the D911 departmental road from Grésy-sur-Aix to Cusy . There are other road connections with Saint-Offenge-Dessus, Trevignin and the high plateau of Mont Revard. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 8 km away.
