geography

Pugny-Chatenod is located at 620  m , near Aix-les-Bains , about 15 kilometers north of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, on the western edge of the Bauges massif and at the foot of Mont Revard , in a panoramic position around 380 m above the lake level of Lac du Bourget .

The area of the 5.36 km² municipal area includes a section in the Alpine foothills. The western part of the municipality is taken up by the slope of Pugny-Chatenod, which slopes gently towards Aix-les-Bains. The area is drained by the Dorfbach to the west to the Sierre and thus to the Lac du Bourget. Above the village, the wooded steep slope of Mont Revard joins, which is characterized by striking, vertically sloping rock walls. On the high plateau of Mont Revard, the highest point of Pugny-Chatenod is reached at 1537  m . The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

The settlement area consists of two gradually merging parts: the village center around the original parish of Pugny and Chatenod, which is about 150 m below. In addition to this settlement area, Pugny-Chatenod also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Les Barrals ( 530  m ) on the slope below the village
  • Les Bollons ( 710  m ) on the slope of Mont Revard

Neighboring communities of Pugny-Chatenod are Grésy-sur-Aix and Trévignin in the north, Les Déserts in the east, Mouxy in the south and Aix-les-Bains in the west.

history

The station on the rack railway to Mont Revard

The parish of Pugny was first mentioned in 1340 as ecclesia de Pognye . Chatenod is of more recent origin and has only one prayer chapel. Since the Middle Ages Pugny-Chatenod belonged to the dominion of Aix.

The cog railway Chemin de fer du Mont-Revard , opened in 1892, ran right through the municipality of Pugny-Chatenod and had a station in Pugny. The connection was shut down in 1937.

Attractions

The village church of Pugny-Chatenod was built in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. The route of the former rack railway is now a hiking trail.

With 951 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Pugny-Chatenod is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century, a marked increase in population has been recorded again since the early 1970s thanks to the attractive residential area. Since then the number of inhabitants has almost quadrupled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Pugny-Chatenod was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry areas.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The village is accessed from Aix-les-Bains via Mouxy or from Grésy-sur-Aix via Trévignin. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 8 km away.
