geography

location

Sainte-Marie-d'Alvey is located on the western edge of the department at 492  m , about 16 kilometers west of the prefecture of Chambéry , 71 kilometers east-southeast of Lyon and 45 kilometers north of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). Neighboring municipalities of Sainte-Marie-d'Alvey are Saint-Genix-les-Villages with Saint-Maurice-de-Rotherens in the north, Gerbaix and Novalaise in the east, Rochefort in the south and Gresin in the west.

topography

The area of the 2.61 km 2 municipality covers a section of the Avant-Pays Savoyard , the Savoyard foreland characterized by gentle elevations between the border river Guiers and the southern end of the main anticlines of the Jura . The eastern edge of the municipality is a step in the north-south direction, here about 200 m high, which separates the valley floors of the Rhone and Guiers from the plateau occupied by the Lac d'Aiguebelette southeast of the municipality. The step of the terrain, interspersed with vertically rising rock faces, is slightly more flat in the northern part of the municipality and enables a road connection to Novalaise there. The Truison and Côte-Envers rivers mark the other boundaries of the municipality and drain the municipality towards the Rhone. To the west of the terrain level, the municipal area consists of rolling hills and is largely used for agriculture. Forests make up about 27% of the area.

In addition to the actual town center, Sainte-Marie-d'Alvey also includes the hamlet of La Blanchinière and a few other farms.

history

The parish of Sainte-Marie-d'Alvey was first mentioned in a document in the High Middle Ages around 1100 as Ecclesia beate Marie de Arvisio . The name addition, which goes back to the Roman proper name Alvisius , appears in later variants as Dalver (1241) and de Alvesio (17th century). Under the sovereignty of Savoy-Piedmont and until the French Revolution , there was a small rule in Sainte-Marie-d'Alvey that was dependent on the lords of Gerbaix. The parish was merged with that of Rochefort in 1803 until it regained its independence in 1848.

Attractions

From the aire de repos des Chenevières viewpoint above Sainte-Marie, there is a panorama over the Avant-Pays Savoyard . It also provides access to the GR 9 hiking trail .
