Billième at the foot of the Mont de la Charvaz |
Billième is a French municipality with 269 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry . Billième is a member of the Communauté de communes de Yenne and is located not far from the Rhone in the southern tip of the French Jura Mountains .
geography
Billième is located about 19 km northwest of the prefecture of Chambéry , 60 km south-southwest of the city of Geneva and 32 km southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). Neighboring municipalities are La Chapelle-du-Mont-du-Chat in the east, Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu in the south, Yenne in the west and Jongieux and Ontex in the north.
The place extends on the western slope of the Mont de la Charvaz , a 1158 m high mountain in an anticline in the southern Jura, which continues with the Mont du Chat and the Chaîne de l'Épine further south and in the east to the Lac du Bourget borders. The municipality includes the summit of Mont de la Charvaz and from there drops to the west first steeply, then gently down to a pronounced edge of the terrain, behind which the marshy plain around Yenne and the Rhône valley spreads.
The following settlements and hamlets belong to the municipality:
- the center of Billième at 408 m ,
- les Jacquins ( 494 m ) below the Charvaz summit,
- Gerbaz ( 410 m ) south of the town center,
- Combes ( 385 m ) below the town center.
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1285 under the name Billiema , which goes back to a proper name and of which the variant Billiemaz has also been passed down. The parish belonged to the diocese of Belley in the 14th century. In the Middle Ages, Billième was the center of a small rule. This belonged to the possessions of Lucey , which was made Marquisate in 1654 . From 1800 to 1814 Billième was united with the neighboring municipality of Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu to Billième-Chevelu .
Attractions
The Château de Billième is a 13th century permanent house that was the seat of the Lords of Billième until the 15th century. It is located at the lower edge of the town center and was later the residence of wealthy aristocratic families. During the French Revolution , the defense tower was dismantled in connection with the actions against heavily fortified mansions. The Château de Bornessant dates back to the 16th century and is located on the slope of Mont de la Charvaz. After parts of the complex had also been demolished during the French Revolution, the current shape emerged as a large-scale building with four round corner towers.

With 269 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Billième is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population fell slightly in the first half of the 20th century, the trend has been reversed since the early 1990s. The local residents of Billième are called Billiémand (e) s in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Billième was a village dominated by agriculture , in particular dairy farming and cattle breeding. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Billième is located in the Savoie wine-growing region . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie or the stricter designation of origin Vin de Savoie Jongieux applies to white wines of other grape varieties as well as red wines .
Some workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. The 1.5 km long tunnel through the Montagne du Chat massif, opened in 1932, made the connection to the greater Chambéry much easier .
