Voglans is a French commune with 1,897 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of La Motte-Servolex in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Voglans is located at 262  m , about seven kilometers north of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, in the Alpine foothills southeast of Lac du Bourget , slightly elevated on the eastern edge of the wide valley floor that extends south of the lake and is flanked by Mont du Chat in the west and Mont Revard in the east.

The area of the 4.62 square kilometer municipal area includes a section of the Chambéry valley basin. The main part of the area lies in the valley floor, which is around two kilometers wide here and which used to be an extensive swamp area. Today the area is drained and used intensively (agricultural and industrial zones). In the far west, the community area extends to the canalized river Leysse (tributary of the Lac du Bourget). In the east, the communal soil extends over the terrace of Voglans to the adjacent ridge that separates the plain from the valley of the Tillet . At 393  m , this ridge is the highest point in Voglans.

In addition to the actual town center, Voglans also includes several hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:

  • Bouvard ( 250  m ) slightly elevated on the eastern edge of the valley floor
  • Villarcher ( 240  m ) in the middle of the Chambéry valley

Neighboring communities of Voglans are Le Bourget-du-Lac and Viviers-du-Lac in the north, Sonnaz in the east, Chambéry in the south and La Motte-Servolex in the west.

history

The municipality of Voglans was already settled during Roman times, which could be proven on the basis of wall foundations, ceramic fragments and inscriptions. Voglannum was first mentioned in a document in 1042, when a Benedictine priory was founded in the village and placed under the responsibility of the Novalesa Abbey in Piedmont . The names Voglen and Vouglens appeared later . In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Bourget rule.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Martin von Voglans was built in 1862 in the neo-Gothic style. The town council is now located in the Château de la Serraz.

With 1897 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Voglans is one of the smaller communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century, there has been a significant increase in the population since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until the 20th century, Voglans was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , especially viticulture . From 1877 to the middle of the 20th century there was a factory that processed lignite. Today various small and medium-sized businesses are based in Voglans. Larger commercial and industrial zones were created along the main road in the valley plain south of Lac du Bourget. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located above the main road D1201 (formerly N201 ), which leads from Chambéry along the east bank of Lac du Bourget to Aix-les-Bains . Further road connections exist with Le Bourget-du-Lac and Sonnaz. The closest connection to the  A41 motorway is around five kilometers away. In Voglans there was a train station on the Culoz – Modane railway line . Chambéry-Savoie Airport is located on the plain south of Lac du Bourget on the communal floor of Voglans.
