Les Marches is a commune Déléguée in the French municipality of Porte-de-Savoie with 2,689 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

location

Les Marches is located at 319  m , about 11 km southeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 39 km north-northeast of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). The village lies on the border with the Isère department at the transition from the valley furrow from Chambéry to Grésivaudan , the Isère valley above Grenoble. Neighboring communities of Les Marches were Myans and Chignin in the north, Francin in the east, Laissaud and Chapareillan in the south and Entremont-le-Vieux and Apremont in the west.

topography

The area of 15.35 km² of the Commune déléguée comprises three different geological formations. The northern part belongs to the valley furrow of Chambéry and contains the settlement area of Les Marches, which forms a continuous development with the neighboring municipality of Myans. The southern part climbs to a point up to 1115  m the foothills of the Chartreuse , a pre-alpine limestone massif with elevations up to about 2000  m . As a result, the Commune déléguée is largely within the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional de la Chartreuse ). The third, eastern part of the soil of the Commune déléguée forms an approximately 2 km long bank section of the Isère, the valley formation of which widens in the area of Les Marches to Grésivaudan. The area of the Commune déléguée is drained by small streams to the Isère.

The intensive agricultural use of the soil is reflected in the proportional land cover of the area of the Commune déléguée, which is led with 33.5% by vineyards, followed by trees (18.6%), fields (16.7%), meadows (14 , 8%) and other agricultural land (10.4%).

Structure of the Commune déléguée

The medieval town center of Les Marches is closely built up on an elongated base that protrudes from the valley furrow of Chambéry. An industrial park extends at the bottom of the valley furrow between the motorway and the town center. In addition, several hamlet settlements and farmsteads belong to the Commune déléguée, including:

  • Les Abîmes ( 321  m ) on the border with Myans,
  • Saint-André ( 369  m ) on another step above the medieval town center,
  • Mure ( 285  m ) in the southern part at the transition to the Isère valley.

history

On January 1, 2019, the municipality of Les Marches merged with Francin to form the Commune nouvelle Porte-de-Savoie. Since then it has had the status of a Commune déléguée. It previously belonged to the canton of Montmélian in the Arrondissement of Chambéry and was a member of the Cœur de Savoie community association .

Attractions

The Château des Marches (rear view)

The densely built-up, medieval town center is isolated on a railing and extends between the Château des Marches on one side and the village church on the other. The Château des Marches dates back to the 14th century and received further extensions and alterations in the following centuries. The most important is the ballroom from 1780 to 1790 with trompe l'œil frescoes by the Galliari brothers, it is inscribed as monument historique . The village church dates from the 19th century.

The Lac de Saint-André was created by the landslide of 1248 and is a nature reserve. Various parts of the bank area are approved for fishing and swimming.

With 2653 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016), Les Marches was one of the medium-sized communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined after the annexation of Savoy to France (1861 there were still 1868 inhabitants), the population has increased again since the 1970s. The local residents of Les Marches are called les Marcherus in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

The Lac de Saint-André surrounded by vineyards

Les Marches is still a predominantly agricultural village today . Viticulture is particularly important , as it concentrates on the locations whose subsoil arose from the landslide. As part of the Savoie wine-growing region , the AOC Vin de Savoie generally applies to white , rosé and red wines of various grape varieties . For white wines with jacquère as the main grape variety , the stricter designations of origin Vin de Savoie Apremont and Vin de Savoie Les Abymes also apply , provided that the wine was produced on site from the grape harvest to bottling. In addition, there are now various local small businesses and some medium-sized businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Grenoble and Chambéry area .

The village is conveniently located where the main arteries of the Savoie department meet. The A41 and A43 motorways run along the municipal boundaries and offer various connections within a few kilometers. The department road D1090 (formerly N90 ) connects the junction of the A43 directly with the municipalities in Grésivaudan and runs through the village. Further road connections exist with the neighboring communities of Myans and Francin. The nearest regional train station is Montmélian on the Culoz – Modane and Grenoble – Montmélian routes . The passenger airport Chambéry-Savoie is 21 km from Les Marches removed.

education

In Les Marches there is a pre-school ( école maternelle ) and two primary schools ( école primaire , one of which is privately run).
