Saint-Offenge-Dessous is a commune déléguée with 776 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the commune of Saint-Offenge in the Arrondissement Chambéry des Départements Savoie .

geography

Saint-Offenge-Dessous is located at 587  m , about 20 km north-northeast of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The former farming village extends in the foothills of the Alps on a plateau on the lower western slope of the Montagne de Bange (part of the Bauges massif ), above the valley of a small river, the Sierre .

The 7.92 km² area of the former municipality covers a section of the French Alpine foothills. The western border runs along the Sierre , cut into an erosion valley , which with its side streams drains the area west to the Lac du Bourget . From the valley of the Sierre the community area extended eastward over a gently rising slope to the plateau of Saint-Offenge-Dessous, which has a moorland. This is followed by an increasingly steep and wooded slope. The municipality floor reached up to the ridge of the Montagne de Bange , on which the highest point of Saint-Offenge-Dessous is reached at 1410  m . The community part lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Offenge-Dessous also includes various hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:

  • Les Nantets ( 480  m ) in the Sierre valley
  • La Plesse ( 585  m ) on the high plateau of Saint-Offenge
  • Le Croset ( 520  m ) in the valley of the Sierre
  • Le Rocheret ( 600  m ) at the western foot of the Montagne de Bange
  • Les Huguets ( 690  m ) on the western slope of the Montagne de Bange

Neighboring communities of Saint-Offenge-Dessous were Saint-Ours and Cusy in the north, Arith in the east, Saint-Offenge-Dessus in the south and Montcel and Épersy in the west.

history

Saint-Offenge is mentioned for the first time in a document in the 13th century. The place name goes back to Saint Euphemia , martyr of Chalcedon (city) . The part of the name "-Lessous" corresponds to "Unter ..." in German place names and has been distinguishing the community from the uphill Saint-Offenge-Dessus , whose village church was originally dedicated to the same patroness, since the 14th century . In the Middle Ages, Saint-Offenge-Dessous belonged to the La Bâtie-d'Albanais rule.

After Savoy was annexed to France in 1860, the municipality belonged to the old canton of Aix for a long time, from 1973 to the canton of Aix-les-Bains-Nord-Grésy and during 2015 to the newly created canton Aix-les-Bains-1 . The merger with Saint-Offenge-Dessus, only 500 m away, to form a new municipality was decided by the two municipal councils in October 2014 and came into force on January 1, 2015. Saint-Offenge-Dessous became the capital of the new parish.

Attractions

The village church was built in the 19th century. There is a country chapel above Le Croset.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Offenge-Dessous was a village dominated by agriculture . In addition, various local small businesses have recently developed. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Chambéry and Annecy area .

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from the D911 departmental road from Grésy-sur-Aix to Cusy. There are other road connections with Saint-Ours and Montcel. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 10 km away.
