The Antonov An-178 is a twin-engine , the Ukrainian aircraft manufacturer Antonov developed and An-148 family belonging transport aircraft . The design is based on the Antonov An-158 , but has a different fuselage cross-section.

history

Development began in 2010 with the aim of developing a transport aircraft to replace the obsolete aircraft types Antonov An-12 , Antonov An-26 and Antonov An-32 . The first flight of the prototype took place on May 7, 2015 with the test pilot Andrei Spassibo. On the same day, the President of Silk Way Airlines announced the signing of a contract for the order of ten An-178s. The Chinese company A-Star has expressed its intention to buy two aircraft and possibly produce them in their own country.

The first military user could be Saudi Arabia , which signed a letter of intent for 30 units for the Royal Saudi Air Force at the end of 2015 . The Iraq followed in 2016 and wants to acquire an on-178th Azerbaijan receives 10 aircraft in the form of assembly kits, which should be assembled in the country within 2 years from 2016 and - as already mentioned above - are intended for Silk Way Airlines . Due to a cost increase from approx. 25 million US $ to approx. 45 million US $ per unit, no unit has yet been built. The reason for this is that (cheaper) Russian components had to be replaced by western ones. Azerbaijan offered to source the Russian parts and deliver them to Ukraine for the kits to be completed. An agreement between Antonov and the representatives of Azerbaijan / Silk Way Airlines has not yet been reached.

Another user could be India , which has stopped working with Russia to build the Il-214 and is now focusing on the An-178 as a replacement for its An-26 .

After the end of the cooperation with Russia, the An-178, as part of the An-1x8 Next program, is to be revised with the help of the Boeing subsidiary Aviall.

In November 2019, it became known that a contract had been signed with the Ministry of Interior of Peru for the delivery of An-178. The agreement provides for the production and delivery of aircraft for the Peruvian National Police and provides a package of services for training, maintenance and warranty extension.

Constructive execution and technology

The aircraft is largely based on the An-158 and, like this one, has a shoulder- wing design with wingtips and a T-tail unit . In contrast to the An-158, the main landing gear consists of a frame for two twin tires. Under the wings are two Progress D-436-148FM - turbofan engines . The flight control uses a fly-by-wire system and has a mechanically operated reserve system with cables. The range of the aircraft is 1000 kilometers with a payload of 18 tons and 3700 kilometers with 10 tons.
