The Antonov A-40 or KT was a project of a flying tank by the Antonov design office during World War II .

history

In order to equip partisan units with stronger armament in World War II and also to give paratrooper units a certain armor, Oleg Antonov had the idea of equipping a light tank with wings and all the instruments.

The 5.8 ton T-60 was chosen as the tank, and a total of two ton airframe was attached to the vehicle. In the summer of 1942 the machine was ready, and the first flight allegedly took place on August 7, 1942 behind a Tupolev TB-3 bomber with Sergei Anochin . As the engines of the tow plane were soon overheating, the test flight was canceled. Further test flights showed similar results, because the air resistance of the tank was so great that the engines overheated. Due to the changed war situation, the work was given up in September 1942.

The entire test flight history seems doubtful: Depending on the source, there was exactly one test flight, a test flight series or even just one test flight attempt in which the A-40 could not be got off the ground.
