Frank M. Swartz

Frank McKim Swartz (born March 31, 1899 in Bellevue , Ohio , † December 2, 1982 in Tucson , Arizona ) was an American paleontologist and geologist .

Life

He was the son of geologist Charles Kephart Swartz and brother of geologist Joel Howard Swartz . Swartz went to school in Baltimore and studied at the local Johns Hopkins University with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1921. In 1923/24 he was an instructor for geography at the University of North Carolina and then an instructor for geology at the School of Mineral Industries of Pennsylvania State College . In 1926 he received his doctorate in geology and was from 1927 Assistant Professor , from 1931 Associate Professorof geology and from 1944 professor of paleontology at Penn State. From 1945 to 1961 he was there in front of the department or faculty for geology. In 1964 he retired.

He dealt in particular with stratigraphy and tectonics of the central Appalachians , carbonate rocks of the Ordovician and paleontology of ostracods of the Paleozoic .

In 1959 he was President of the Paleontological Society . He was a fellow of the Geological Society of America .

In 1925 he married Ruth Passmore Hull.
