Charles Kephart Swartz

Charles Kephart Swartz (born January 3, 1861 in Baltimore , Maryland , † November 29, 1949 ) was an American paleontologist , geologist and mineralogist .

Life

Swartz was initially a Methodist clergyman and later studied geology in Germany and at Johns Hopkins University , where he also became an instructor in 1904 and then professor of geology and mineralogy. In 1931 he retired.

He dealt with the stratigraphy of the Silurian in North America and regional geology especially of Maryland , for example the coal basins of Maryland.

In 1935 he was President of the Paleontological Society .

The mineral Swartzit is named in his honor.

His son Joel Howard Swartz (1893-1971) was also a geologist and geophysicist and his son Frank M. Swartz was a paleontologist.
