History and origin of name

Like Donnerberg, the Birkengang area had belonged to Eschweiler since the 18th century at the latest . On January 1, 1935, Birkengang was separated from Eschweiler to Stolberg together with Donnerberg, Duffenter, Steinfurt, Steinbachshochwald , Velau and the Stolberger Hauptbahnhof .

The name comes from the walk through the birch trees as a typical growth on the poor soil on the site of the former Eschweiler Birkengang pit (1581–1883). The street name Am Göpelschacht in the Donnerberger settlement is a reminder of mining . The Birkengangstraße continues to Eschweiler, where it was called Birkenstraße until 1982 . The hard coal extracted in the mine initially covered the energy needs of the Eschweiler zinc smelter Birkengang (1845–1926). The Birkengang Räumschlackenhalde was recultivated with state grants from the city of Stolberg from 1987 to 1992 for 2.28 million DM .
