geography

The Atsch district is partly on a hill between the Brander Forest, Propsteier Forest and Würselener Forest . The Inde flows on the southern outskirts . Here the Inde is also called Münsterbach from the confluence of the Vicht upstream. In the Middle Ages, the imperial abbey Kornelimünster was the owner of extensive lands, the Münsterländchen . In old maps the brook is called Münsterbach. The Münsterbachtal, the Münsterbachstrasse and the Münsterbach nature reserve are named after them.

Surname

The origin of the place name is not clearly established. The female gender of the Atsch does not further contribute to the interpretation, as the name is usually associated with ash as the origin. Unproven and doubtful is the presumed origin from the Gallic place Atuatuca , where the legendary battlefield of antiquity is to be found.

history

The area of the Atsch looks back on a long mining activity. Coal mining areas have been used since the Celtic and Roman times and the remains of settlements from this era are documented. At the exit towards Verlautenheide / Würselen , remains of the Roman road from Aachen to Jülich have been preserved, and a Roman burial ground between Igelweg and Würselener Strasse is known. Not far from there are a Celtic and a Roman burial mound .

The first mention of St. Sebastianus - Chapel ., Which until the 18th century backlog, dates back to 1474.

In the so-called Hövvelen (High German = the hills), between Mozartstrasse and Hammstrasse, Pingen can be found as a remnant of medieval or early modern mining activities. Because the Atsch lies in the area of hard coal deposits in the western part of the Inderevier . In 1845 the Atsch mine was set up here in the area of the Atsch triangle , which reached its maximum depth of 220 m in 1860 and was abandoned in 1870 due to insufficient coal reserves. Today, the central component of it is preserved as a residential building.

During the French annexation of the Rhineland from 1794 to 1815, the Atsch belonged to the Mairie Forest in the canton of Borcette in the Département de la Roer .
