Oronzo Reale (born October 24, 1902 in Lecce , Province of Lecce , † July 14, 1988 in Rome ) was an Italian lawyer , publicist and politician of the Partito Repubblicano Italiano (PRI), which among other things was a member of the Chamber of Deputies ( Camera dei deputati ), was Italy's Minister of Justice and judge at the Constitutional Court ( Corte Costituzionale ) several times .

Life

Lawyer and MP

After attending school, Reale completed a law degree and was already active as chairman of the Republican Youth Association ( Federazione giovanile repubblicana ) during his studies in 1920 . After completing his studies he worked as a lawyer and was active in the Resistancea , the resistance movement against Italian fascism , during the Second World War . In 1943 he became a member of the Executive Committee of the Partito d'Azione .

After the end of the Second World War, Reale first became a member of the National Council ( Consulta Nazionale ) on April 5, 1945 and was then a member of the Constituent Assembly ( Assemblea Costituente della Repubblica Italiana ) from June 25, 1946 to April 26, 1948 . During this time he moved from Partito d'Azione to the PRI, founded in 1895, in 1947 and then returned to practice as a lawyer.

On June 2, 1958, he was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies and represented the constituency of Ancona until he left parliament on July 4, 1976. During his long membership in parliament, he was initially chairman of the parliamentary group of the electoral alliance between December 1962 and May 1963 Misto , which included the PRI.

Minister and constitutional judge

On December 4, 1963, Reale was appointed Minister of Justice ( Ministro della Giustizia ) by Prime Minister Aldo Moro in his first cabinet and held this office in Moro's second and third cabinet until June 24, 1968.

After he was chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the Chamber of Deputies from July to December 1968, he served again from March 27, 1970 to March 6, 1971 in the third cabinet of Mariano Rumor and in the government of Prime Minister Emilio Colombo .

Between July 1972 and November 1974 Reale was again chairman of the Judicial Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and at the same time from July 1973 to November 1974 chairman of the PRI parliamentary group. Subsequently he was again Minister of Justice in Moro's fourth cabinet from November 23, 1974 to February 12, 1976. After leaving the government, he was again chairman of the PRI parliamentary group in the Camera dei deputati between February and July 1976.

On January 31, 1977, Reale was finally appointed judge at the Italian Constitutional Court for a nine-year term and held this position as judge at the Corte Costituzionale until January 31, 1986.
