Alfonso Bonafede (born July 2, 1976 in Mazara del Vallo ) is an Italian politician of the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) party and lawyer. Since June 1, 2018, he has been the Italian Minister of Justice in the Conte I and Conte II cabinets .

Life

Bonafede was born and raised in Mazara del Vallo in the province of Trapani in Sicily . In 1995 he began to study law at the University of Florence , which he graduated with the Laurea in 2002 . At the University of Florence he met the professor in private law and later Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte , whom he introduced to the five-star movement. After the laureate, he completed a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Law at the University of Pisa .

He was admitted to the bar in Florence in 2006 . He has his own law firm in the city on the Arno .

Bonafede is married and has two children.

Political career

Active in the ranks of the five-star movement since 2006, he ran for the movement founded by Beppe Grillo as mayor of Florence in 2009 . In the mayoral election won by Matteo Renzi , Bonafede was only able to collect 1.82% of the votes.

In the parliamentary elections in 2013 , he entered the Chamber of Deputies for the five-star movement . During the entire 17th legislative period, he was Vice-President of the Judicial Commission of the Chamber of Deputies and a member of the five-member panel of appeals in the Chamber of Deputies.

In his first legislative term, he tabled a bill for the introduction of general class actions , which the chamber approved in essence. In addition, he campaigned for a simplification of divorce law , which was partially included in a corresponding change in the law in 2015.

After his re-election as a member of the Five Star Movement in the 2018 parliamentary elections , he was sworn in as Minister of Justice in the Conte I cabinet on June 1, 2018. His main focus as minister is the fight against corruption and tightening of the statute of limitations. The last point in particular brought him into confrontation with the Lega led by Matteo Salvini , which led to considerable tensions with the coalition partner. He also advocates stricter penalties for acts of violence against women .

After the break of the yellow-green government coalition in August 2019, he was confirmed in office under the subsequently yellow-red coalition with the Democratic Party in the Conte II cabinet.

Bonafede is considered a close confidante of Luigi di Maio .
