Silvio Gava

Silvio Gava (born April 25, 1901 in Vittorio Veneto , Treviso Province ; † December 23, 1999 in Rome ) was an Italian lawyer and politician of the Democrazia Cristiana (DC), who was among other things a member of the Senate ( Senato della Repubblica ) as well as for 28 years was several times minister of various departments.

Life

After attending school, Gava studied law and worked as a lawyer after graduating.

In the elections for Italy's first parliament after World War II , he was elected a member of the Senato della Repubblica on April 18, 1948 and was a member of the DC for more than 28 years until July 4, 1976.

During the first legislative period during the term of office of Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi , Gava was first Undersecretary of State for the Treasury from November 1949 to January 1950, then Undersecretary of State for the budget and then again from July 1951 to July 1953 for the Treasure.

On July 16, 1953, Prime Minister De Gasperi appointed him Minister for Industry and Trade ( Ministro dell'Industria e del Commercio ) in his eighth cabinet. Subsequently, he was appointed Minister of the Treasury ( Ministro del Tesoro ) by Prime Minister Giuseppe Pella on August 17, 1953 and also held this office in the subsequent governments of Amintore Fanfani , Mario Scelba and Antonio Segni until January 29, 1956. In the government of He later served as Prime Minister Adone Zoli from May 29, 1957 to June 30, 1958, again as Minister of Industry and Trade.

During the third legislative period, from July 1958 to December 1960 was first chairman of the Standing Committee on Industry, Internal and Foreign Trade and Tourism and then from October 1960 to May 1963 chairman of the DC faction in the Senate. He also held the office of parliamentary group chairman during the eighth and at the beginning of the ninth legislative period from July 1963 to December 1968. At the same time he was chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs between April 1962 and May 1963.

On December 12, 1968, Gava was appointed Minister for Pardons and Justice ( Ministro di Grazia e Giustizia ) by Prime Minister Mariano Rumor in his first cabinet and held this function during the second Rumor government until March 26, 1970. Subsequently, on March 27, 1970, he became Minister for Industry, Trade and Crafts ( Ministro dell'Industria, del Commercio e dell'Artigianato ) in the third Rumor cabinet and held this office in the subsequent government of Emilio Colombo and in the first cabinet of Giulio Andreotti until June 24, 1972.

In the subsequent second cabinet of Andreotti, he was Minister without Portfolio ( Ministro senza Portofiglio ) for the reform of the public administration and most recently from 6 July 1973 to 13 March 1974 in the fourth Rumor Minister without portfolio for the organization of public administration.

His son Antonio Gava was a member of the Camera dei deputati and was also a minister and senator several times.
