Luigi Di Maio (born July 6, 1986 in Avellino ) is an Italian politician of the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) party. He has been the Foreign Minister of Italy in the Conte II cabinet since September 5, 2019 .

From June 2018 to September 2019, he was Minister for Economic Development , Minister for Labor and Social Policy and Deputy Prime Minister in the Conte I cabinet .

Life

Di Maio's father Antonio was a real estate entrepreneur and was politically active for the neo-fascist MSI , his mother was a teacher. Di Maio attended the humanistic high school in Pomigliano d'Arco .

Di Maio began studying engineering at the University of Naples , but then switched to law. He used his time at both faculties to set up student interest groups , but did not obtain any degree. In 2007 he registered as a journalist and subsequently worked for a short time as a webmaster , henchman, waiter and usher in the San Paolo stadium in Naples.

Political career

Di Maio became a supporter of Beppe Grillo's protests in 2007 and a member of Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) in 2009 . In 2010 he ran unsuccessfully for the council of Avellino. Di Maio was elected to the Italian Parliament in the 2013 general election and was named one of the Vice-Presidents of the Chamber of Deputies on March 21, 2013 . Di Maio belongs to the leadership of the M5S party around the party founder Beppe Grillo and Davide Casaleggio .

In mid-September 2017, Di Maio announced that he wanted to run for his party in the parliamentary elections in spring 2018 . In the movement's online primaries on September 23, 2017, Di Maio was elected political leader and top candidate for the next parliamentary elections. He received a large majority of around 82 percent of the vote. But only just under 37,500 of the more than 140,000 party members took part. From the parliamentary elections in March 2018, the 5-star movement emerged with Di Maio as the top candidate as the strongest party.

On June 1, 2018, he was sworn in as Minister for Economic Development and Minister for Labor and Social Policy in the Conte I cabinet. Together with Matteo Salvini , he was also Deputy Prime Minister until the coalition with the Lega broke up in August 2019. After forming a new coalition with the Democratic Party , he took up his new post as Foreign Minister in the Conte II cabinet on September 5, 2019.

On January 22, 2020, Di Maio announced his immediate resignation as political leader of the 5-star movement. For his resignation he blamed internal party quarrels about himself and his leadership style.
