Carlo Calenda (born April 9, 1973 in Rome ) is an Italian lawyer and politician . From 2016 to 2018 he was Minister for Economic Development . He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2019 .

Life

After studying law, Calenda started working for Ferrari in 1998 , where he was responsible for foreign customers and relations with financial institutions. He was head of marketing at Sky Italia television . In the employers ' association Confindustria he was assistant to the president, from 2004 to 2008 head of the department for strategic and international affairs under Luca Cordero di Montezemolo . Afterwards he was General Manager of Interporto Campano and President of Interporto Servizi Cargo . He was also the political coordinator of Montezemolo's think tank Italia Futura .

The Italian general election, 2013 Calenda advocated Mario Monti's Civil List Civic Choice , but was in his home region Lazio no electoral mandate win. On May 2, 2013, Enrico Letta appointed him to the government as Vice Minister for Economic Development . He kept this office under Matteo Renzi (until March 2016). As deputy minister, Calenda was particularly responsible for foreign trade . From 2015 he was non-party.

On January 20, 2016, Calenda was designated by the Council of Ministers as the new Permanent Representative of Italy to the European Union . He took office on March 21, 2016. The appointment of a politician to this post met with considerable opposition from Italian diplomats. The appointment of politicians to ambassadorial posts is not common in Italy.

After the resignation of the Minister for Economic Development, Federica Guidi , Calenda returned to Rome after a short interlude in Brussels , where he succeeded Guidi on May 10, 2016. He also held the office in the successor Cabinet Gentiloni until its replacement on June 1, 2018.

After the parliamentary elections in March 2018, he declared his accession to the Partito Democratico . In the 2019 European elections , Calenda was the PD's lead candidate in northeast Italy and was given a seat in the European Parliament , where he belongs to the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats (S&D).
