David-Maria Sassoli (born May 30, 1956 in Florence ) is an Italian politician of the Partito Democratico (PD). He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009 . From 2014 to 2019 he was Vice-President, since July 3, 2019 he has been President of the European Parliament .

Journalistic activity

David Sassoli holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Florence . After working for smaller daily newspapers and press agencies, he became a member of the Roman editorial team of Il Giorno in 1985 . In 1992 he switched to public television and worked for Sandro Curzi at the Telegiornale of Rai 3 . The main subjects of his reports were the mafia and organized crime. In the 1996-97 season he directed the afternoon show La cronaca in diretta for Rai 2 under Carlo Freccero . For this he received the Premio Ischia Internazionale di Giornalismo in 1997 as the best television journalist of the year .

In 1999 he joined the editorial team of TG1 , Rai 1's main news show , as a special correspondent . In 2007 he became Vice Director of TG1 and responsible for TV7 and Speciale TG1, programs with political background information. From 2004 to 2007 he was chairman of the Roman Association of Journalists (Associazione Stampa Romana) . He is also involved in the Articolo 21 association , which advocates freedom of expression and freedom of the press (protected in Article 21 of the Italian Constitution).

In the European elections in 2009 , Sassoli was elected as the top candidate of the Partito Democratico in central Italy and with over 400,000 preferential votes in the European Parliament . During his term as a member of parliament he is on leave of absence from the RAI, but has announced that he will “dedicate the rest of his life to politics”.

He belongs to the parliamentary group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats (S&D) and was spokesman for the group of PD MPs in the 2009-2014 legislative period. From 2009 to 2010 he was a member of the Development Committee , from 2010 to 2014 of the Transport and Tourism Committee . He was also the delegate for relations with Israel and for relations with the Pan-African Parliament . In the run-up to the mayoral election in Rome in 2013, Sassoli applied in the primary for the candidacy of the center-left alliance. With 28% of the vote, he came second behind Ignazio Marino , who won the candidacy and then the election for mayor.

After being re-elected as a member of the European Parliament in 2014 , Sassoli was one of the Vice-Presidents of the EU Parliament for the legislative period until 2019. He was also a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and the delegation for the Parliamentary Stabilization and Association Committee between the EU and Serbia . He appeared as a critic of the Italian government from Lega and the 5-star movement , particularly with regard to the migration issue and the confrontational attitude towards the EU institutions.

On July 3, 2019, he was elected President of the EU Parliament to succeed his compatriot Antonio Tajani . In the second ballot he got the necessary majority with 345 of 667 valid votes.

Private

David Sassoli is married and has two children. He is considered a progressive Catholic and has been involved in Catholic organizations since his youth. He is a fan of the soccer club Fiorentina .
