Ireland for Europe
Ireland for Europe is a non-governmental organization that was founded after the failure of the Irish referendum on the Treaty of Nice and campaigned for the ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon .
Two campaigns
The first Ireland for Europe campaign was chaired by Adrian Langan and then, since October 2001, by Ciarán Toland . Michelle O'Donnell (secretary) and Kevin Byrne (campaign director) later led the team. In August 2002 Ireland for Europe joined the Irish Alliance for Europe . At the end of 2002 it stopped its activities.
In June 2009 a new organization of the same name was founded with Pat Cox as campaign director. Its aim was to have a positive influence on the second Irish referendum on October 2, 2009 on the Lisbon Treaty . For this purpose, Cox resigned from his position as President of the European Movement International until the end of the campaign. Ireland for Europe was the largest of the numerous civic groups promoting the treaty and had notable supporters such as Nobel Prize winner Seamus Heaney and U2 guitarist The Edge . The referendum in October 2009 ended with 67.1% approval of the Lisbon Treaty.
