Prodi I cabinet
The Prodi cabinet ruled Italy from May 17, 1996 to October 20, 1998. Before that, the Dini cabinet , then the D'Alema I cabinet . The government of Prime Minister Romano Prodi was supported by the center-left alliance L'Ulivo and a few smaller parties.
After the collapse of the old party system and the parliamentary election against Berlusconi in the spring of 1996, Romano Prodi continued the reforms of various previous governments and increasingly gave his own reform impulses. An important goal was the accession of Italy to the European Economic and Monetary Union . The break-away of the radical left Rifondazione Comunista , which criticized neoliberal tendencies, led to the resignation of the Prodi government in 1998.
