De Gasperi II cabinet
The De Gasperi II cabinet ruled Italy from July 13, 1946 to February 2, 1947. Before that, the De Gasperi I cabinet ruled , then the De Gasperi III cabinet . The government of Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi was supported by the following parties in the Constituent Assembly :
- Democrazia Cristiana (DC)
- Partito Comunista Italiano (PCI)
- Partito Socialista Italiano di Unità Proletaria (PSIUP)
- Partito Repubblicano Italiano (PRI)
The De Gasperi II cabinet was the official first government of the Republic of Italy proclaimed on the basis of the referendum of June 2 and 3, 1946. The previous cabinet remained in office during the first weeks of the new republic, until the Constituent Assembly, also elected on June 2 and 3, elected Enrico De Nicola as provisional head of state, who then swore in the new government. The De Gasperi II cabinet resigned in early February 1947 because of a split within the PSIUP. The new (old) Socialist Party PSI and the Social Democratic Party PSDI emerged from the PSIUP .
After the end of the Second World War , De Gasperi's government, who remained in office as Prime Minister until 1953 , was primarily concerned with rebuilding the country, which remained under Allied occupation until the Paris Peace Treaty of February 10, 1947.
