Claudio Burlando (born April 27, 1954 in Genoa ) is an Italian politician ( PCI , (P) DS , PD ). He was Mayor of Genoa from 1992–93, Minister of Transport of Italy from 1996–98 and President of the Liguria Region from 2005–15 .

Life

After completing an engineering degree in electrical engineering from the University of Genoa , he worked as a scientist at the electronics company Elsag-Bailey .

He came into contact with politics at a young age. He joined the Communist Party of Italy (PCI) and was secretary of the party's Genoese department from 1989 to 1990. With the PCI he turned away from communism in 1991 and became a member of the Partito Democratico della Sinistra (PDS; Democratic Left Party). From 1994 to 1996 he was a member of the party executive, responsible for the local offices. After the party's transition to the Democratici di Sinistra (DS), he was appointed economic officer. On October 14, 2007 he was elected to the constituent general assembly of the Partito Democratico . He was a member of the commission that drafted the new party's manifesto of values .

Local politics

While still a member of the Communist Party, he was a member of the municipal council of his hometown Genoa from 1981 to 1993 . From 1983 to 1985 he was also an assistant for transportation. As a result, he was appointed deputy mayor (1990-1993) and on December 3, 1992, finally elected mayor of the city of Genoa. On May 19, 1993, Claudio Burlando was arrested and had to resign from the mayor's office. He was suspected of being involved in some bribery scandals. With the final judgment of January 27, 1997, however, he was acquitted of all guilt.

National politics

In 1996, Claudi Burlando was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as a PDS member and was appointed Minister of Transport by the then Prime Minister Romano Prodi . During his tenure as minister he was repeatedly criticized for the ailing condition of the state railway Ferrovie dello Stato .

President of the Liguria Region

In the elections of April 3 and 4, 2005, Claudio Burlando was elected President of the Liguria Region as a candidate for the center-left alliance L'Unione with 52.6% of the vote. The opponent of the center-right alliance was the incumbent Sandro Biasotti ( Forza Italia ). The development of the Erzelli high-tech zone near Genoa Airport was initiated by Claudio Burlando. In the regional election in March 2010 - in which the duel against Biasotti was repeated - Burlando succeeded in re-election with 52.1%. In 2015 he no longer competed.
